
Welcome to Grade 1&2A at Our Lady of Victory School

Welcome to Homeroom A! This year we will be working together for most of our subjects. If you ever have any questions or concerns, I can be reached via email at j.lamaria@victoryedu.com or through Class Dojo. You can also read updates about our classroom events and activities on our website and on our Class Dojo stories.
Communication: This year, I will be using email, and Class Dojo to keep you informed about classroom and school activities. These are FREE services that allow me send quick messages via text, or the app to every family in the class. We can stay in touch without revealing our personal contact information. Please see the attached instruction sheets. If you have any difficulty signing up, please let me know.
Agendas: Students will record notes, messages, and important dates in their agendas on a daily basis. Please check and sign your child’s agenda each evening. Notes to and from the school may be placed in the pouch at the front of the agenda.
Home Reading: Students are encouraged to read for at least 15 minutes each evening, with an adult. Students will have access to www.raz-kids.com. Usernames and passwords were sent home.
Religion: We will be learning about I am a Child of God, My Life in Jesus, The Story of Advent, Lent and Easter, Religious seasons, sacraments, Holy Family, Ten Commandments, and Heaven. Prayers are a part of our daily schedule.
Language Arts: students will be exposed to many activities to develop stronger reading and writing skills, increase fluency and confidence. This year we will incorporate Daily Five, weekly word study activities, phonetic and literacy activities, show & tell, home reading, and guided reading. Language skills are used daily in many subject areas.
Science: the strands we will be covering this year are: Characteristics and Needs of Living Things, The Five Senses, Characteristics of Objects and Materials, and Daily and Seasonal Changes. Students will explore the curriculum with hands-on experimentation, and research.
Social Studies: the strands we will be learning about this year are:
I Belong - exploring our relationships with others and the communities in which we live. We will explore our community, cultures, identity and celebrations, traditions and history that are part of our lives
My Environment – studying maps and globes in order to understand our community. We will locate our community, province and country. We will learn about official languages, symbols and landmarks. Students will distinguish between needs and wants.
Connecting with Others – exploring our rights and responsibilities as members of the community. Students will learn how we help and depend on one another, and how different people meet their needs, express themselves, and influence each other. We will also learn the purpose of rules and how to solve conflicts
Math: Grade one students will be learning about patterns and relations, number
concepts and operations, and shape and space. Grade ones will be given the opportunity to develop sorting skills, develop number sense, and work on addition and subtraction problems. Grade two students will be learning about patterns and relations; statistics and probability; measurement; number/number operations. The students will be exposed to activities that will develop sorting skills, develop measuring skills using nonstandard measuring tools, develop larger pattern skills, develop stronger number sense, understanding of place value, and work on two-digit addition with regrouping.
All students will be learning strategies to improve their mental math skills, and problem solving skills. All students will receive login information for www.happynumbers.com and are encouraged to visit this website on a regular basis to strengthen their math skills.
